Andrea De Silva

Andrea is a respected international award-winning visual story-teller and integrated photojournalist with 33 years of experience capturing a full spectrum of people, places, and events both locally and abroad. Andrea’s experienced eye weaves stories which do not need words or explanation and she has become one of the most sought-after photojournalists in the Caribbean by world-renowned media houses and news agencies.

Open minded and always bringing fresh perspectives to her work, Andrea is equally at home;from creating extraordinary images of the Tadjah(Hosay) while up to her chest in sea water and being bathed with colourful beer whilst at the festival of Phagwato capturing the critical news moment with global and local leaders, as well as celebrities in the spotlight.

Andrea’s passion for photography was groomed during an internship at the Trinidad Guardian Newspaper where she was told by then Chief PhotographerRudy Taylor to go out and take photos. “He liked the pictures I took, so he published my work. I wasn’t paid but it was a good experience,” recalls Andrea.

Covering a range of media events from sports and entertainment, to business conferences, breaking news stories and a range of cultural activities, Andrea has carved her professional identity in various media houses including the Guardian, Express and The Wire newspapers. She worked her way up from being a freelance photographer to Chief Photographer, Associate Photo Editor, and Acting Photo Editor.

In December 2006, Andrea resigned from The Guardian to promote her own brand, Silva Image, an all-purpose photography company, which has been embraced by a number of individual and corporate clients in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.

In 2007, Andrea De Silva was contracted to work as a photojournalist with the well-respected Thomson Reuters News Agency (Reuters), the world’s largest multimedia international news agency, where her photographs continue to earn her high commendations globally.

Andrea was invited by the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission in the United Kingdom to stage an exhibition of her work there in July 2008. That exhibition followed a similar showing of her digital images at the Goudenough College in London during an event for international students. She also exhibited her work among other Caribbean artists at Lancaster Great House in Barbados in the same year.

In 2014 she was hired by the Financial Times of London, in collaboration with Pulitzer, on a Caribbean-centered piece and in 2015 her image of the “blood moon” was recognised among the best photos at the once in a generation event by Time Magazine. Her work for Reuters has been featured in several leading media houses including CNN, BBC, ABC, Fox, MSN, Al Jazeera, NBC, Yahoo News, Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated – just to name a few.

In 2017, three (3) of Andrea’s images from Trinidad and the Kaieteur Falls, Guyana, were chosen by the organizers of the project “100 Wonders of the World”, an exhibition at the Art Center in St Petersburg, Russia. She was the first Caribbean photojournalist to be invited to exhibit her work as part of the display which includes images from various photographers accredited to publications such as National Geographic, GEO, Scientific American, Outdoor Life, and others. The exhibition is being taken to several Russian cities and has been viewed by thousands of visitors, including school children.

In 2018 two of Andrea’s images were chosen by MacMillan Publishing Company in the UK; one being the cover of the book “My Self, My World”.

Andrea has also done freelancework for a number of international publications and media houses. Among them:

INTERNATIONAL ACCOLADES

Andrea’s international
recognition includes:

Despite her many accomplishments and awards, Andrea remains just as excited about photography as she was in her days as an intern.

"I am very passionate about photography. It is like therapy for me; when I’m working I become so consumed by what I’m doing that I just forget about everything else,” says Andrea. “I like to capture people in different walks of life and in various circumstances. My goal is to bring the viewer to a place where they should feel as if they’re there, watching the moment live."
